Character Name: Mark Cohen
Series: RENT [stage production, not movie]
Timeline: After the end of RENT.

Character History: Mark Cohen was raised in a traditional Jewish household in a town called Scarsdale, New York. Growing up, he was often pressured into a certain mold by his parents and constantly at odds with his father. He left Brown after a couple of years of attempting to get a business degree and moved to New York City in order to follow his dreams. This event caused a major fall out between his father and himself, one that had been coming to a head for years. [This is mentioned in the "RENT Bible," the workshop, and the demo versions]

Years later, Mark is frustrated with his lack of success. He decides to "shoot without a script," to see if he would do better. He messes around with his roommate, Roger Davis, and attempts to encourage the musician to leave the loft [to no avail]. Tom Collins, vagabond anarchist and computer genius, calls up from the payphone outside the loft and gets Mark to throw down the keys, only to be jumped shortly afterwards. Mark and Roger soon recieve another phone call and both become frustrated at their former roommate and now landlord's decision to charge them rent after promising them that they could live there rent free.

Mark leaves to go fix his ex-girlfriend Maureen's sound equipment for her protest against Benny later that night. However, he quickly comes back home just in time to be there for Collins and his new friend Angel's arrival [since Angel seems to prefer she/her pronouns, as seen when Mark corrects himself at her funeral and Angel smiles, I'm going to use she/her pronouns for her from here on out]. Collins introduces Angel to them, who they soon come to love after she regales them with a tale about how she caused a dog to commit suicide earlier that day.

Benny visits and informs Roger and Mark that if they can get Maureen to call off the protest, then he'll drop the whole 'rent thing.' The moment that Benny leaves, Mark leaves [along with Collins and Angel] to go save Maureen's protest. There, he meets the woman that Maureen left him for, Joanne Jefferson. He warns her of Maureen's habits and such and, despite the initial awkwardness, they quickly become close friends and bond over their frustration of Maureen.

After learning about Mimi, Mark tries to encourage Roger to pursue her because [at the time] he believes that she would be good for him [mainly because he's oblivious to the fact that she's a drug addict, thanks to Roger omitting that from the story]. Eventually, Mark is introduced to Mimi and they seem to get along rather quickly.

Fast forward to New Years where Mark and the gang throw a "breaking back into the building" party. The footage that Mark got of Maureen's protest and the following riots were bought by the news, something that impresses even his father [as we learn via answering machine by his mother]. Alexi Darling from Buzzline also calls, offering Mark a job, something that delights Maureen to no end. Mark refuses, saying that he'd be selling out and Joanne agrees with him.

Over the next few months, Mark is left to his own devices for the most part as his friends become caught up in the good and the bad of their relationships. He's forced to watch on the sidelines as his friends become divided and as Angel's health slowly deteriates before their eyes, helpless to do much beyond being a shoulder and an ear for anyone who needs him. He's the one that Collins tells of Angel's passing and it's hinted that he's the one who tells the others.

At Angel's funeral on Halloween, Mark speaks fondly of his friend and we soon learn that he wound up accepting the job at Buzzline. He tries to stop Roger from leaving and going to Santa Fe, only to get into a fight with his best friend. After Roger leaves, he speaks with Benny and Mimi, telling them that he knows of a good clinic where Mimi can get clean.

Fast forward to when Roger gets back from Santa Fe. The two of them have an emotional reunion, although their happiness is quickly shattered by the news that Mimi is missing. They spend months searching high and low for her and soon enough, it's Christmas once more. It's been one full year since the whole mess started and Mark's finally finished his documentary.

They go to watch it, but Benny once more cuts off their power. Collins finally come back, handing out money and letting them know that he's re-wired an ATM at the closest Food Emporium to give a little bit of money for anyone who knows the code [A-N-G-E-L]. Their amusement is quickly cut to an end when Maureen and Joanne show up carrying Mimi, whom they found in the park.

Mark and the others help carry Mimi upstairs and lay her on a table where they watch her slowly begin to die in front of their eyes. Roger sings his final song for Mimi as she dies, turning away as Roger cries over her limp body. They're all shocked when she suddenly comes back to life, a miracle that they all know will be all too brief as she's still too sick to last for much longer.

Abilities/Special Powers: N/A
Third-Person Sample: Something was wrong. Mark realized it before he even opened his eyes to look at his surroundings. The buzz of cars, the occasional emergency siren, the shouts from the homeless and the kids that had constantly filled Mark's ears as background noise was conspiculously absent. It was quieter than what the filmmaker had become accustomed to over the years and that in itself unsettled him.

He slowly opened his eyes and found his surroundings blurred. After a brief moment of panic, Mark realized that it was because his glasses were dangling off of his ear and quickly corrected them. He slowly sat up, squinting slightly in the bright sunlight. He found himself lying on a stretch of sandy beach, one that was far cleaner and quieter than the beaches that he'd visited on vacations with his family when he was younger.

It was warm, too warm for the scarf and thick jacket that he was wearing. Shrugging out of them, he noticed that his camera was laying a short distance away. Panic swelled through him as he practically lunged for it, chest constricting as he scrambled to grab it off of the sand.

"No, no, no," he was moaning, trembling fingers quickly searching to make sure that there was no new damage to it. "Please work, please work, please work," he murmured desperately, any attempt at trying to figure out where he was and how he'd gotten there momentarily forgotten as he worked to make sure that his prized position, and lifeline, wasn't screwed up.
First-Person Sample: [A pale man with dark rimmed glasses, extremely bright blue eyes, and a curious expression appears in the feed. He studies his image for a moment, seeming to marvel at it, head tilting a bit to the left.

The image shifts slightly as he sits it a little further back. The room behind him comes more into focus, showing a place filled with an organized sort of chaos. There's a worn plaid jacket and blue and white scarf thrown carelessly on the bed behind him. An old, clearly well loved, camera sits on top of the jacket
]

So....

[He seems slightly hesitant and more than just a little awkward. His body shifts slightly, causing the image to shake just a bit. He clears his throat and tries again]

So....um....Does anyone know where I can find a man named Roger Davis? Or perhaps a Mimi Marquez, Maureen Johnson, Joanne Jefferson, Tom Collins....hell, I'd be happy to even Benny right now.

[The names are rattled off quickly and he suddenly stops, inhaling sharply. His hands are trembling now, as evidenced by his now slightly shaking image. He pushes up his glasses with his free hand as he debates how to ask this next question]

Also, does anyone....um....is there a camera store or....or somewhere that I could get extra film for my camera at?
